Why they etch
The dropping is acidic. On a cool panel it sits. By afternoon on a Live Oak driveway the panel is hot and the acid has started a ring. Exterior detailing soaks and lifts a fresh dropping. A ring that has already eaten the clear coat does not wash off.
That ring is a paint correction question, and only if the clear is thick enough to polish. We look before we promise.
What not to do
Do not scrape it with a fingernail or a dry towel. Soak it, then wash the panel. A ceramic coating makes the next dropping easier to release. It does not make an etched ring disappear. Coating over the ring locks it in.
If the rest of the car is due, the dropping is one note on an exterior visit, not a separate emergency price. We still quote the vehicle.

How long a dropping can sit
A dropping on a hot San Antonio panel starts etching the same day. Soaking and washing can lift a fresh one. If the clear is thin, we say so and stop.
