The plain definition
Clear coat is a layer. Wash scratches and buffer trails live in it. Polishing levels that layer just enough to make the defects harder to see. That is paint swirl removal. If the defect is through the clear, polishing cannot invent new clear. That limit is when a scratch is too deep to polish. This is the whole idea, and every honest paint correction page in San Antonio should be willing to say it before the appointment. A test spot is how we prove the idea on your panel instead of on a brochure. You should see the spot in the sun. You should hear whether the rest of the vehicle will respond the same way. Dark colors show more. Repainted fenders behave differently. We stop when the clear says stop.

A coating or sealant protects whatever finish you have after those steps. Stacking them blindly is how people pay for coating over swirls.
